Ukraine
is one of the successful former Soviet Union Nations (FSU) that has
completely opened it markets only recently. Often called the “Breadbasket of
the Former Soviet Union ” it is truly a nation where food stuffs grow
in abundance. Unlike many of the other CIS nations, Ukraine has solidly
signaled a desire to progress toward the West.
The recent “Orange Revolution ” was the latest signal by the Ukrainian
people of this intent.
The old Soviet government has been replaced with West leading governmental
officials who are striving for EU Membership. Great strides into a free market
have taken place and Ukraine understands what it has best to offer. According
to the Ministry of Agriculture and Interior development in Ukraine the
Ukrainian wheat harvest is forecast to be 19.1 million MT. With a local
consumption estimated to range from 9.0 (Feb 2003/4) and 12.5 (Feb 2004/05)
million MT, the remaining wheat available for export is forecast to be between
6.6 and 10.1 million MT. The government of Ukraine has allotted a buy back
program which means the commercially available harvest for export will range
from 3.5-7.0 million MT.
